ALROSA: Protecting the Majestic Reindeer of Siberia

The statue in Mirny celebrates the legacy of the city: geologists, a reindeer herder, and the majestic reindeer.

Standing tall in the city of Mirny, Russia’s diamond capital in Siberia, a statue celebrates the legacy of the city: geologists, a reindeer herder, and the majestic reindeer.  The city, home to one of the world’s largest diamond mines, hosts the statue to educate travelers and locals about the special relationship between diamonds and reindeer.

Over 200,000 reindeer live in Siberia, but in 2015, the reindeer was added to a list of vulnerable animals.

ALROSA, world’s leading diamond miner based in Russia, has worked to not only protect the local wildlife, but to also celebrate the reindeer. ALROSA recently developed the “Yakutia Diamonds Live” initiative, which created the Living Diamonds Park.

“The intiative meets both an ecological function – preservation of rare animal populations and nature in its original form, and a social one,” ALROSA Deputy CEO, Alexey Dyachkovsky, said.  “Since its establishment, the park has become one of the favorite recreation spots for the citizens of Mirny and for the guests of the diamond capital.”

Now, diamonds can be said to be the key to the reindeer’s survival.

ALROSA’s support is vital to the balance and harmony, which could see wild reindeer taken off the vulnerable species list and generations of herders supported for years to come.  Now, diamonds can be said to be the key to the reindeer’s survival.

The protection of the reindeer population program, which is also run with  ALROSA’s funding, ensures the optimal migration of the reindeer from one pasture to another. This is critical for conserving reindeer populations and preserving vulnerable ecosystems.

Furthering their framework for sustainable development, ALROSA also developed a unique initiative aimed at preserving traditional lifestyles of some indigenous peoples of the North and maintaining the biodiversity in the region.

While diamonds are forever, organizations are working to make sure that our Earth and its’ ecosystems are forever, too. The diamond industry and the efforts from companies such as ALROSA further the idea that Diamonds Do Good.
